Barcelona’s vice president of economics, Eduardo Romeu , has confirmed that the club currently has no budget, which is only feasible if Messi is a free agent.
Messi recently admitted that he struggled in his first year in Paris, but now it feels different and his form has greatly improved. However, Barcelona remain determined to reunite.
Romeu told Radio Catalunya: “If he comes back, it should be free, so it is feasible in my field, although not in my budget. He is an icon for the club, here Will always be his home, but it will be a technical decision.”
Messi’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain will be accepted this season, however it includes an option to extend it until 2024 .
Romeu also said that although Barcelona ‘s financial situation is much better now than before, it still needs to tighten and it may take two years to return to more normal levels. “We saved Barca, but we haven’t solved it yet. There is still a lot of work to do, it involves a lot of austerity and rigour. We will be at a level that corresponds to us in 2024-35. ”
