Manchester City snapped up Borussia Dortmund centre-back Manuel Akanji on a cut-price deal..

Manchester City announced on their official website last night that the club has signed Switzerland international centre-back Manuel Akanji from Borussia Dortmund.

According to Manchester City’s official statement, Akanji has agreed to a  five-year deal with the club that runs through summer of 2027. He will also be wearing no. 25 shirt vacated by former legendary club captain Fernandinho, after the Brazil international midfielder left the club this summer.

In addition, according to the renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Akanji’s transfer fee is €20 million in total, of which €17.5million is the initial fee, and an additional €2.5million as add-ons.

After completing the joining procedures, Akanji said that Pep Guardiola is the best manager in the world, and the players in the team are also the best in the world, so he is looking forward to helping the club achieve more success together in the Premier League.

He also added that being able to come to a big club like Manchester City that can win countless trophies year in year out is the best challenge to improve his career.

Akanji, who has just turned 27, was born on July 19, 1995 in Wiesendangen, Switzerland. He is 1.86 meters tall. He is a central defender and has dual nationalities of Switzerland and Nigeria. His mother is a former Swiss professional tennis player, and his sister, Sarah is also a Switzerland women’s international centre-back.

Akanji joined the youth training system of the hometown club Wiesendangen with his sister when he was young. Later, Akanji switched to the youth training system of the newly-promoted Swiss Super League club FC Winterthur youth academy at the age of 12, and completed his first-team debut in 2014.

The following summer, Akanji joined the Swiss giants Basel and soon became a key player after arriving, winning 2 Swiss Super League and 1 Swiss Cup in the process.

During the winter transfer window of January 2018, Akanji joined Borussia Dortmund for €18million. Although he won 1 DFB-Pokal and 1 DFL-Super Cup with the club during his time there, Akanji was often criticised for making many uncharacteristics errors costing BVB chances to challenge for the Bundesliga title.

Last season, Akanji made 36 appearances in all competitions for the Black and Yellows, scoring once.

Akanji originally had a year to left on his contract with Dortmund, however as he was determind to move on and refused to renew his contract, thus the club had no choice but to sell him to City at a cut-price fee that is below the market value.
