Several local media in Greece reported on Thursday that Greek international center-back Kostas Manolas is likely to be moved on from Olympiacos to UAE club Sharjah.
According to reports, Manolas, who only returned to the defending champion of the Greek Super League during the winter window in January last season, has been clearly told that he is not in the manager’s plan and that he is free to find a new club and leave.
Later, the news was also confirmed by renowned Italian transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano. According to Romano, although Manolas received an invitation from a Saudi Arabian club, Olympiacos has actually reached an agreement with Sharjah, and Manolas himself has pre-agreed on personal terms with the UAE Pro League side.
Manolas is expected to sign a two-year deal with Sharjah which runs until 2024, but has option for a further year.
The third marquee signing
Manolas’ arrival means he will become the third top European star Sharjah has signed during this summer’s transfer window. Prior to this, they also signed Spain international center forward Paco Alcacer as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina international midfielder Miralem Pjanic from Villarreal and Barcelona respectively. It is worth noting that this will also be the second time that Pjanic and Manolas play together in their careers.
The 31-year-old Manolas has played for AEK Athens, AS Roma, Napoli and other big clubs. He played for Olympiacos for the first time between 2012 and 2014. At that time, with his outstanding performance, Manolas had been pursued by Everton, Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, but he chose to move to Serie A.
After coming to Serie A, Manolas was the absolute main player in Roma, but because of his bad temper, I Giallorossi agreed to sell him to Napoli in the summer of 2019. After switching to I Partenopei, Manolas’s career has been constantly plagued by injuries, so disheartened and in order to escape the nightmare, he chose to return to Olympiacos in January this year.
However, the opposite is that since joining, although Manolas has helped the club won the Greek Super League once again, he has not been able to secure the himself as the main player of their first team. With club owner Evangelos Marinakis who also owns burnt through fortunes in the transfer window for both clubs, where he also brought in two former Real Madrid stars Marcelo and James Rodriguez with high wages, In order to reduce expenses, Manolas has become the player sacrificed by Olympiacos. So far this season, he has only had opportunities to play in the league for 3 times.
