Chelsea official: England left-back Chilwell misses World Cup with injury

Premier League Chelsea club announced on the 5th that 25-year-old England left-back Ben Chilwell will miss the 2022 Qatar World Cup due to a hamstring injury.

“It turns out that Ben is seriously injured. Unfortunately, the defender will miss the World Cup. He will start a rehabilitation program under the arrangement of the club’s medical department,” Chelsea said in a statement.

So far this season, Chilwell has always maintained an excellent competitive state, scoring 1 goal and providing 2 assists for Chelsea in 14 games in all competitions. His stellar performances at the club have put him on track to be one of England’s 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Chelsea completed the reversal of Dinamo Zagreb in the final round of the Champions League group stage on Tuesday and advanced to the round of 16 knockout stage with the top spot in the group. However, Chilwell injured his left thigh hamstring late in the game and had to leave the field with the help of two medical staff.

After the game, The Daily Telegraph confirmed that the players are expected to be out of injury for 3 months and have no hope of playing in this World Cup. Chelsea’s latest injury report also confirms previous reports by The Daily Telegraph.

Chilwell’s statement

Chilwell later updated his social media updates, expressing great regret about missing the World Cup: “After the cruciate ligament injury, I trained very hard to make sure I was ready for the World Cup. Participating in the World Cup has always been my dream, unfortunately, my scans show I’m out of the World Cup.”

“I will do my best to hopefully get back to Chelsea as soon as possible,” he finally added.

Chilville’s replacement

England are already stretched thin at left-back, and Chilwell’s injury is now adding to the woes for Southgate. According to British media speculation, Manchester United’s Luke Shaw, Newcastle United’s Trippier and Liverpool’s Arnold are the only three more suitable candidates in Southgate’s regular defender list. Justin is also expected to make the shortlist.
