Champions League – Napoli defeats Ajax 4-2 and advances to the last 16 of the Champions League

In the fourth round of the Champions League Group A in the 2022/23 season, Napoli defeated Ajax 4-2 at home and advanced to the top 16 two rounds ahead of schedule.

In the first half, Lozano opened the scoring and Raspadori expanded the score. In the second half, Klaassen pulled one back, Kwaratsk Helia and Bergwijn scored penalties respectively, and Osimhen scored a goal before the end to win.

At the end of the game, Napoli topped the list with a record of 4 wins, qualifying ahead of schedule for the first time in team history. Ajax has only 3 points after a 3-game losing streak and is currently third in Group A.

first half

Napoli’s start was perfect: just 4 minutes after the opening, Zielinski sent a superb pass from outside the penalty area, and Lozano scored the first goal with a header. In the 16th minute, Raspadori dunked Blind with his right foot after getting the ball from Kvaratskhelia and scored with a volley with his left foot.

On the other hand, Ajax had many chances to change the situation in the first half, but unfortunately, the players were unable to convert it into a goal: in the 9th minute, Bergwijn and Kudus cooperated continuously and shot with a right foot, but it was successfully resolved by Meret; in the 13th minute, Bergwijn’s forward pass instantly penetrated Napoli’s 4-man defense, but Kudus failed to shoot on target in a one-on-one situation.

In the 28th minute, Ajax made continuous passes in the frontcourt to create a threat, but Taylor’s shot from a small angle ended up hitting the side net.

second half

In the opening stage of the second half, Ajax pulled one back from Klaassen: In the 49th minute, Bassey made a cross from the left, and Klaassen took off and scored with a header from the middle, 1-2. Unexpectedly, 12 minutes later, Ndombele volleyed Timber’s handball, and Kvaratskhelia hit a penalty kick to expand the score, 3-1.

Napoli could have consolidated their advantage in the next 20 minutes, but lost two scoring opportunities in a row: in the 74th minute, Lozano’s shot was quite threatening, but it was saved by Pasveer. In the 79th minute, Ndombele’s through ball was sent to the goal by the unguarded Osimhen, but his goal was rejected as offside.

In the last 10 minutes of the game, Juan Jesus fouled Brobbey in the penalty area and he fell to the ground. Bergwin then took a penalty kick and scored 2-3. However, Osimhen scored another goal less than a minute before the end: he scored an empty goal with his left foot after stealing the ball from Blind, making it 4-2 for Napoli.
