Renowned English reporter, Dermot Corrgian of The Athletic, brought exclusive news on Sunday that goalkeeper André Onana has suddenly chosen to withdraw from the Cameroon’s 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar national team squad due to a falling out with head coach Rigobert Song.
According to the report, Onana was omitted due to disagreements with Rigobert Song over the weekend and was not scheduled to play against Serbia in the second round of the group stage game on Monday (November 28) local time.
It is reported that Onana was called by Rigobert Song for questioning after the training session on Saturday, and in this conversation, Rigobert Song made it clear that he was dissatisfied with Onana’s ball-playing style of goalkeeping, and that he had hoped that he could change his playing style to that of the traditional conservative goalkeeping style, but Onana refused because he considered the risk would be great, and Rigobert Song decided to ommit the player just because he was enraged that he had refused to accept his suggestion.
After learning that he was expelled, Onana, who was furious, was planning to leave the team immediately. Samuel Eto’o, the chairman of the Cameroon Football Federation, who is also the nation’s legendary former international striker, tried to comfort, mediate and persuade Onana to change his mind, but the player was determined to never accept it, and was exposed to have left Qatar and returned home.
With Onana’s sudden withdrawal from the team, the total number of players in Cameroon’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar has been reduced to 25, and only Devis Epassy and Simon Ngapandouetnbu are the only goalkeepers left. It is still unknown when Onana will return to the Lions of Teranga at the moment.
The 26-year-old Onana is currently playing for Inter Milan. The former Barcelona youth academy graduate and Ajax’s first-choice goalkeeper has represented Cameroon 35 times in all competitions since 2016.
